DVD Portable Players – Functions And Features

Executive Summary about Portable DVD Recorder by Menachem Green

Families going on vacations either by car or by air would like to spend their time peacefully watching movies or family memoirs using DVD players. In the market, a large number of portable DVD players are available with special features and these are convenient for any user.

The size of the screen is the first thing one considered when choosing between portable DVD players. An ideal DVD player for the road would have a built-in screen. Although a DVD player with a larger screen will be more cumbersome, the larger screen allows for an improved viewing experience for more people at the same time.

One more thing to take into account while selecting a DVD player is the available audio and video outputs. Should you choose a small player without a built in screen, the available video out are a fundamental issue to consider.

Nowadays some DVD players come with HDMI out or High Def Multimedia Interface. This type of cable enables high quality audio and high definition video resolution. Most new DVD players feature this option for audio and video outputs. But you will find it hard to find a HDMI DVD player which is both portable and small. Portable DVD players/recorders are also particularly hard to source.

Portable DVD Cases

Executive Summary about Portable DVD Recorder by Thomas Morva

Portable DVD cases are cases that are used to carry numerous DVDs while traveling. As a DVD is actually a small item, all cases are considered to be portable. As traveling induces the possibility of getting the DVDs wet, portable DVD cases are made to be water resistant. Portable DVD cases are often considered to be the perfect car accessory, especially for long road trips.

Using the portable DVD player and the DVDs in the case, one can watch favorite movies while on the road. To buy a portable DVD case, one only needs to either visit an electronic appliance store or visit one of the numerous online stores available on the Internet. Some of them have a shoulder strap attached to it so that you can strap the portable DVD case on your shoulder while traveling.

Buying a Portable DVD Player For Your Car

Executive Summary about Potable DVD Recorder by Levi Quinn

When buying a DVD player for your car, it is advisable to consider portable players. Portable DVD players reduce the monotony of traveling and also offer some form of peace in regard to the provision of headphones. Nowadays, vehicles come with a standard DVD player that is built-in, but one can add their personal Multimedia system or DVD player into their existing vehicle. The latter largely depends on which position of the car the DVD player is mounted.

Choosing a DVD player for your car largely depends on one’s budget and needs. Portable DVD players can be purchased and for power, they are simply plugged into the cigarette lighter of the car. The removal of portable DVD players is rather easy, but those built specifically for vehicles are permanently mounted. In the case of batteries, most setups of DVDs requiring batteries come inclusive of rechargeable batteries. When buying a DVD player with a theater system that is full-fledged and is incorporated with a TV tuner, one should buy a good quality antenna to receive perfect reception.

Digital or Analog For Your Home Recording Studio?

Executive Summary about Home DVD Recorder by Blake Mead

home dvd recorder

It used to be that if you wanted to record music at home, you used an analog 4-track that recorded on a cassette tape. Recording on a digital format has become so simple and inexpensive that the number of large professional recording studios has diminished greatly in the past several years.

Anyone can now record music at home on a computer or a digital recorder. Converting signals from digital to analog and back to digital etc. degrades the sound quality of the signal with each conversion. Some people just prefer the sound of analog equipment and tape. Often times an analog recording of acoustic music can preserve the natural sounds of the voices and instruments much more accurately than a digital format can.

Once you have decided to record either digital or analog, you must then pick exactly which format you will use. There is hardware and software for recording on these and other digital formats. Which format you pick will determine exactly what equipment you will need for recording on that format.

The surge in popularity of digital recording has given consumers a great selection of recording equipment and software at very reasonable prices. If you choose to build your home recording studio around an analog format, your search for equipment may be more difficult. Very few manufacturers still offer new analog recording equipment, but there are some high quality pieces available. One other issue to consider with analog equipment is service. The cost and availability of new digital recording equipment makes digital gear virtually disposable.

Educating Yourself About Home Theater Systems

Executive Summary about Home DVD Recorder by Chris Robertson

If you think of buying something as expensive and complex as, for example, a home theater system, you’ll want more information than a bored sales associate at an electronics store is likely to give you.

People often talk about Web 2.0. It is a term that loosely describes the use of the Web for information sharing, social networks and web-based communities. Web 2.0 means websites where people contribute, generate content, help each other, and share experiences and opinions. Blogs are a Web 2.0 phenomenon, as are the customer reviews now commonly found attached to product listings. If you go to a department store website it’s not uncommon to find dozens of customer reviews and ratings with products, whether it’s something complex like DVD recorders, DVD players, or even just a hair drier.

I often make a buying decision after I read what a number of other people have said about a product. I rely on those opinions so much that I often look up ratings and opinions on my iPhone while I am in a store. If you think of setting up a home cinema and want to learn about the latest projectors, video switches and 1080p HDTVs, it’s frustrating to have to sift through dozens of sites without getting good information.

There are sites that combine product reviews, product news, and just general product information in numerous categories. They may include YouTube videos explaining and demonstrating products, link collections to products and reviews of interest, RSS feeds, and more.

What’s great about the Philips HDMI 1080i DVD Recorder is that, first of all, it has an HDMI output. And when many brands switched to the cheaper LED outside display, the Philips HDMI 1080i DVD Recorder uses a vacuum fluorescent display.

With the Philips HDMI 1080i DVD Recorder, you can switch between analog or digital with a button unlike others where changing channels involves going through both analog and digital together.

There are two types of captioning with this model, the internal one and one that gets displayed via the TV. It won’t capture the digital captions but will the analog. In other words, you will see two sets of captions if you set both the recorder and TV on captions. Be sure to turn one of them off. The recorder won’t record internal captions via digital recording. However, if you set the TV on cc, you can still see the “normal” closed captioning after making a digital TV recording.

As opposed to other cheaper brands, the Philips HDMI 1080i DVD Recorder plays any homemade recordings without hiccups.

What’s not so great is that it doesn’t record widescreen. If you set the settings to widescreen, it records with the sides mashed together in 4×3. If you set it to 4×3, you will record with the black bands top and bottom. If you record pan&scan, it will record pan&scan and you will lose the right and left sides.

Toshiba DR560 1080p Up-Converting DVD Recorder with Built-In Tuner

toshiba hdmi dvd recorder

The Toshiba’s DR560 is the answer to those looking for an affordable and dependable DVD up-converter and recorder. It’s a quality machine as well as affordable. With only an HDMI cable hook-up, the unit will automatically select the correct mode, saving you any trouble trying to decipher the manual or find the proper buttons on the remote. The problem is, these simple cables can be quite expensive at most national electronics stores. So, your best choice should be in the discount retailers.

The downside of this unit is that the remote doesn’t have the ability to control the TV nor does it come with backlit buttons, which is a nice feature when you’re watching a movie with all the lights out. The setup is quite simple and, as stated earlier, if you use the HDMI input, which is recommended, it is automatic.

The quality and ability of the Toshiba DR560 to up-convert DVDs is fair. For instance, to render a 1080p image from 720p or lower images, though if you expect 1080p quality from these older formats, you’ll be a bit disappointed. Technically, these up-converters take the recorded image and make calculations in order to fill gaps in the image on your screen. (1080p TVs have more pixels to fill, thus the calculations and conversions). But for the money, the Toshiba DR560 does an excellent job.

Now that many TV stations begin to switch off their analog signals, the Toshiba DR560 can be used as a high definition tuner for older TVs. This unit’s best feature, though, is the ability to take analog home video and transfer it to digital, high-quality images on DVD with no editing. The Toshiba DR560 will serve your up-converting and recording needs as well as any DVD recorder on the market.

Just as its predecessors, Panasonic DMR-EZ27 can record on DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and even dual-layer DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL. The recorder also plays all formats. You get the most flexibility if you use DVD-RAM discs, which work faster and let you use more of the recorder’s features.

In addition to all recordable DVD formats, the recorder can play store-bought movies on DVD-Video as well as Video CD, Audio CD, Audio CD-R, Audio CD-RW, MP3 CD-R and MP3 CD-RW as well as CDs with JPEG pictures and DivX compressed videos. Just as most VCRs, this recorder has a built-in NTSC TV analog/digital ATSC tuner, timer recording and manual recording.

The recorder has more speeds/modes than the VCR however, and much better picture quality in top quality modes. The available modes are: XP, SP, LP, EP-6H, EP-8H and flexible recording mode. The digital FireWire (DV Video) input is available on the front panel.

The HDMI out with up-conversion, with EZ Sync HDAVI Control up-converts 480i DVD discs to 720p, 1080i or 1080p. The recorder has an optical digital audio out, which can be used for DVD playback. The recorder has several recording modes/speeds. The recorder also has EP modes: EP-6H and EP-8H that fit 6 and 8 hours respectively and feature reduced resolution of 260×240 (as they do in other DVD recorders). The audio is recorded in 2-channel (stereo) Dolby Digital AC-3.

The recorder also has flexible recording more that adjusts the recording parameters (bit rate) so that the program fits on the disc at the best possible quality. Both the remote and the recorder look well assembled.

To stop playback just press [Stop] and to stop recording, press [Stop] again, 2 or more seconds after pressing the [Stop] button the first time to stop the playback. DVD-RAM discs do not have to be finalized but can only be played in DVD players that support them: mostly relatively recent Panasonic DVD players. But the power DVD-RAM format is its flexibility when used for re-recording.

They work faster and Panasonic claims high durability in re-recording. The manual recording is easy. Select the recording mode (XP, SP, LP or EP) and hit [Rec]. Stop the recording by hitting [Stop]. With DVD-RAM, there is no waiting after the recording is stopped.
Different recording modes/speeds can be specified for different titles by pressing the [Rec Mode] button. If you change the recording mode while in Rec/Pause state, a new title will be created automatically. The [Rec Mode] button cycles through XP, SP, LP and EP mode. EP mode can be selected between 6-hour and 8-hour mode in the setup menu ([Function] button). You can combine several programs recorded in LP and SP mode on once disc with no problems.

At any time (while not recording) you can hit [Direct Navigator] button to get to the screen which lists thumbnails (video) and descriptions of the titles recorded.
Non-erasable formats can have commercials removed if you watch the program while recording and use the [Pause] button to stop and restart the recording.
Non-DVD-RAM discs have to be finalized before you can play them in a standard DVD player.
The disc finalization takes less than 3 minutes and discs played fine in my DVD players. Overall, the recorder is pretty easy to use.

The ACCUTUNE digital/analog tuner works well, provided the antenna and signal strength are adequate. The best source for recording is, obviously, digital off-the-air programming. Since only 1 hour fits on the disc in the XP mode, use SP mode for high-quality recordings. In the SP mode, the picture quality is almost as good as in the XP mode. The EP modes are mostly suitable for either video programs with mostly static content or programs where sound matters more than the video (concerts, etc.)

Ececutive Summary about Pioneer DVD Recorder by Robert Silva

pioneer dvd recorder

The DVR-533H, Pioneer’s stylish entry-level DVD Recorder/Hard Drive combo, carries on this tradition as a reasonably priced unit that provides performance and flexibility for those entering the world of DVD recording

All DVD recorders can record from any analog video source (most can also record video from digital camcorders via firewire). Like a VCR, DVD recorders all have AV inputs as well as an onboard TV tuner for recording TV shows. DVD Recorders come in several configurations: Standalone, DVD Recorder/VCR Combo, or DVD Recorder/Hard Drive combo units.

A DVD recorder can be used to copy any homemade videos, such as camcorder videos and videos made from TV shows, and can also copy Laserdiscs, and other non-copygaurded video material.

However, just as you can’t copy commercially made video tapes to another VCR due to Macrovision anti-copy encoding, the same applies to making copies to DVD. DVD recorders cannot bypass the anti-copy signal on commercial VHS tapes or DVDs. If a DVD recorder detects the anti-copy encoding on a commercial DVD it will not start the recording and display some sort of message either on screen or on its LED front panel display that it detects the anti-copy code or that it is detecting an unusable signal.

The Pioneer DVD recorder (DVR7000) Reviewed

pioneer dvr 7000

This sleek, feature packed Pioneer DVD recorder (DVR7000) has elite written all over it. There are extra sets of A/V inputs and a FireWire port on the front of the Pioneer DVD recorder (DVR7000). There’s also jog dial (for trick play) and a large record button. These all add up to give the Pioneer DVD recorder (DVR7000) the appearance of a high end DVD player.

The jog dial allows three-speed picture scan, four speed slow motion, still, frame advance/reverse, resume and repeat functionality. The Pioneer DVD recorder (DVR7000) features user-selectable bit rate recording that will allow you to put one to six hours of video on a standard 4.7GB disc. There are 32 recording settings that allow you to fine tune the trade off between picture quality and recording time. In video mode where you copy DVDs to DVD-R, you are limited to two settings. The Pioneer DVD recorder (DVR7000) has a progressive scan output (3:2 pull down) and Dolby Digital (not Surround Sound 5.1) only stereo. The Pioneer DVR7000 burns DVDs on DVD-R or DVD-RW.

Major Quirks: The DVR7000 has component Output but no component Input. The machine cannot burn DVDs on DVD+RW or DVD-RAM discs. The editing features can only be used with DVD-RW discs. Additionally, the video mode (DVD-R recording) settings are limited to two hours maximum recording time.

dvr dvd recorder

If you want to record home movies into DVDs and also time-shifting HDTV programming right into hard-disk drive unit, take a look at the Toshiba RD-XS35SU. As a fairly universal disc player, it could work as a basic CD player or a commercial DVD player. This DVR DVD recorder can also play discs that contain WMA and MP3 files. It can even let you watch CDs or DVDs that are filled with JPEG still images.

However, to achieve high quality recording and playback, while installing the Toshiba RD-XS35SU, you might want to use good quality stereo audio cable for the audio connections and a separate quality video cable for the composite video connection instead of using the 3-wire cable that comes with this DVR DVD recorder.

If you are planning to do a bit of time-shifting HDTV recording, you need to set up the Toshiba RD-XS35SU first to download the TV Guide on Screen Data. This will only work if you are using cable video or an OTA (Over the Air) connection but if you are using a dish system, you will have to refer to your printed TV guide or your local newspaper for listings.

The Toshiba RD-XS35SU also allows you to set up languages and the audio output that you want, adjust the aspect ratio of your video display and other parameters. You can also set up the Toshiba RD-XS35SU’s remote control to operate your TV set as well.

With the Toshiba RD-XS35SU DVR you can record to the hard disk any time you want either manually or by using the timer. If you want to view time-shifted programs, just bring up the on-screen TV Guide, click on Recordings and it will display all the programs recorded on the hard drive.

You can even fast-forward past commercials using the Fast Space button and view a recording already in progress with the Time slip button. If you want to pause live recording then return to it later, you can do so with the Live Chase Play.

Home Recording Studios – How To Get One For Far Cheaper Than You’d Ever Imagine

Executive Summary about DVD Recording by Brandon Robertson

You might be thinking that creating your own recording studio is expensive – too expensive for you to even consider. Perhaps you’ve noticed this yourself: A lot more musicians are building their own recording studios today, and recording themselves.

As a matter of fact, with technology being as advanced and cheap as it is these days, it usually makes more sense for musicians to spend their money on their own recording gear than paying a studio to record it themselves.

One of the most important facts that musicians need to keep in mind – especially if you’re someone who hasn’t made a studio recording yet – it takes a lot of time to make a recording sound polished. As a studio owner myself I can tell you that an average band of musicians making an average, not-very-polished recording of one song will take about 2.5 to 3 hours per song.

Now calculate the cost of mixing and mastering and you’ve spent a lot of money – anywhere between $150 and $300 dollars for just one song, if you have your music mixed and mastered at that studio. Now consider the cost of making a four song demo, at a recording studio, based off of these numbers.

If you create your own studio, the best part is that the next time you record it will be totally FREE!!!

Home Recording Is Easier And Better Than Ever With New Technology!

Making the virtual connections usually only takes a few seconds and requires little knowledge or experience. Almost all of this has been bypassed with modern home recording. And before digital audio all together, it was an absolute nightmare to get the gear all working properly and synchronized.

So once you have the gear, what you need most next is an understanding of the basics of sound recording and connections. Learning the principles is the best way to understanding sound recording because it will allow you to be more creative for artistic sake and more creative when you need to record something unusual (like a new instrument you’ve never recorded before). As a studio owner myself, I rely on the principle to get me by because I’m constantly encountering new recording situations.

What you need to know about connections is easily understood in just a few minutes because it mostly has to do with a few digital connections you might need and a few analog connections dealing with mic cables, guitars cables and similar.

Generally things are designed to simulate real gear, such as mixing boards and processors.

LG DVD Recorder – DR4812W

lg dvd recorder

The DR4812W is a multi-format DVD recorder, meaning you can pop any of the most common types of DVD recordable media into it and just start recording, without having to worry about whether it’s plus or minus. One small catch, though: the DR4812W doesn’t support the less common DVD-RAM media. Depending on your choice of media, you’ll also have a number of recording options open to you — broadly speaking, the write-once plus and minus media is the least flexible, moving up in options with -RW media and into the best possible option choices with +RW media.

The DR4812W supports multiple recording modes, ranging from 1 hour at best possible quality on a 4.7GB disc up to six hours.

However, as a reviewer notes, it took some time to get to grips with the system’s remote control, mainly because most of the buttons, aside from the very regular playback buttons, are all the same size — including the record button. That means it takes a little bit of visual checking to make sure you’re hitting the right button, rather than just being able to ‘feel’ where the correct choice is.

One feature on the remote sure to appeal to hard core couch potatoes is instant skip button, which steps forward in a recording exactly 15 seconds — hit that a couple of times and you won’t even notice any ad breaks in recorded TV broadcasts. We’re sure that TV executives would be less thrilled with that button, but from the consumer side it’s a bit of a godsend.

In playback terms the DR4812W’s a perfectly capable unit. You’ll certainly notice the compression at the highest rates, especially for any broadcast involving lots of action, but with single -R/+R discs going for only a couple of dollars each these days, you’ll probably not need to go to the full compression extremes all that often. One catch we did find — and it’s not terribly well covered in the DR4812W’s manual — is that everything but DVD+RW media needs to be finalized within the player before it’ll be readable in other DVD players. That process took less than a minute each time it was tested with it, but without doing so you’ll be left scratching your head wondering if you’ve just created an expensive coaster. As with most DVD recorders, the DR4812W is Macrovision enabled.

The DR4812W’s isn’t the absolute cutting edge in DVD recorders. It can’t do the time-skipping tricks that hard drive enabled players can, for a start. Still, it’s a great introduction to DVD recorders. It’s capable and easy enough to use with multiple media formats, as well as relatively inexpensive.

Digital DVD recorder – LG DRT389H

By Padusi

The LG DRT389H may not be the easiest DVD recorder to get to grips with, but it’s OK when you get used to it, as the reviewer says. Setting the LG DRT389H between Sky+ box & TV is different to the instructions provided, but if you have half a clue about the signal flow, it all makes logical sense. You just have to fiddle around a little bit.

digital dvd recorder

The reviewer admits that watching up-scaled DVDs with the LG DRT389H really breathes new life into them. You really don’t notice just how much until you go back to watching ’standard scaled’ DVD’s on another device. All in all, it does everything (and a bit more) that you would expect from a machine even if it’s a little pricier.
Having checked out the reviews and cross referenced with which the decision was made, set up was easy but the instructions were slightly confusing. The multiple disc formats may come in handy in the future. The up-scaling of standard DVDs works perfectly and HD playback is incredible. The initial warm up screen is of low quality and the on-screen instructions are in a similar mode, but don’t be put off by this, as Record/Playback is the most important part and this unit certainly delivers both.

The reviewer bought the LG DRT389H as a replacement for an old DVD player, which had seen long service but was past its best. It was chosen as it supported all formats and had more features than equivalently priced models – and it lives up to the spec. Picture quality is excellent and it’s super easy to use once you know your way around the menus.
But that’s the problem – the manual seems to be written in fluent gibberish, and to record from a digital satellite source, one has to set it up completely differently from any of the illustrations or text in the instructions!

For the money, this is a top notch quality recorder. Setup was fairly easy and managed to connect this between the Sky+ box and the TV, enabling recording from Sky+ hard drive to a blank DVD (music videos, etc). For permanent recordings, Verbatim DVD+R discs as recommended since these have the edge over DVD-R. The LG’s menu takes a bit of getting used to, but read the manual fully. The LG DRT389H Recorder is highly recommended as some of the more expensive makes do not have the features that this machine has.
